Helping Your Child Feel Calm at the Dentist
Dental visits do not have to be stressful for your child or you. At The Children’s Dental Centre, we recognize that some children require additional support to feel safe and comfortable during dental care. Whether your child experiences anxiety, has a medical condition, or has had a difficult past dental visit, our paediatric dental specialists are here to help.
With gentle guidance, professional care, and safe sedation options specifically designed for children, we strive to create a calm and positive experience that fosters trust from the very first visit.
We are here to support you. Call 416-252-KIDS (5437) to schedule your child’s appointment.
Request AppointmentWhy Sedation May Be Recommended
Paediatric dentists are specially trained to treat children in a wide variety of situations, including those who feel anxious or overwhelmed during dental visits. Some children may require sedation to help complete dental treatment safely and without emotional distress.
Sedation may be recommended for children who:
- Experience dental anxiety or fear
- Had a difficult past dental experience
- Are medically compromised
- Have developmental, behavioural, or sensory needs
- Require extensive treatment in a single visit
We are committed to supporting you and your child, so every visit feels as safe and comfortable as possible.
Sedation Options We Offer
Every child is different. That is why we offer several sedation options, ranging from mild relaxation to deeper levels of sedation for more complex needs.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
A mild sedative delivered through a soft nose mask. It helps children feel calm, but they stay awake and responsive throughout the appointment. The effects wear off quickly after the visit. Local anaesthesia (needles) is still required for certain procedures.
Oral Conscious Sedation
This combines nitrous oxide with an oral medication taken before the appointment. It provides a deeper sense of relaxation, ideal for children who need more support to stay still or feel comfortable. These children will likely not remember most of their visit. Local anaesthesia (needles) is still required for certain procedures.
In-Office General Anaesthesia
Some treatments may require full sedation in a controlled setting at our clinic. General anaesthesia is administered by an experienced team, allowing your child to sleep comfortably throughout their treatment. Treatment may not require local anaesthesia (needles).
Outpatient Hospital General Anaesthesia
For certain cases, general anaesthesia may be provided in a hospital setting. This is often recommended for children with medical conditions or advanced treatment needs. Your child’s safety is our top priority. Treatment may not require local anaesthesia (needles).
What to Expect as a Parent
Before any sedation is used, we will speak with you in detail about your child’s health history, treatment needs, and the available options. Our team will answer all your questions, guide you through what to expect, and help you feel confident in your care plan.
Our goal is to make every visit to The Children’s Dental Centre as stress-free as possible for both children and their parents.
You will always have the final say in what is best for your child and family. To learn more about sedation dentistry or to schedule an appointment, please contact us at 416-252-KIDS (5437).
